Lexington Market, Baltimore, Md

Baltimore’s Lexington Market is the oldest in America. Founded in 1782 at the site where it stands today, Lexington has served Baltimore and surrounding communities for more than nine generations. It’s as old as America itself.

This Lexington Market has been a staple for so many people in the black community. Remember going to the peanut man and Pollock Johnny’s. This was one of the only places the inner city could get a cake made for their family to celebrate a special occasion with food stamps. This was the 1st stop for Circus, those smelly elephants would be eating peanuts and smashing watermelons and all the kids were filled with excitement and joy.

For some who don’t know including me, but General John Eager Howard, of Revolutionary War fame, donated a portion of his family pasture land to be used as a market. The land lay between what are now Eutaw and Greene Streets, stretching out to the present locations of Baltimore’s Washington Monument and General Howard statue. The site was originally known as the Western Precincts The market but was soon renamed in memory of the Battle of Lexington, the first battle of the American Revolution.

Which means the market was always for the people.
